The Family of George Byron Reed

The Family of George Byron Reed
July 8 1857 - October 27 1929

George Byron Reed Sr. was the son of John Wiley Reed ( 1829-1909 ) and
Louvisa Clementine Hair Reed ( 1834 - 1908 )

Their children were as follows:
Elliott M. Robinson, Jr.       October 11, 1877
Edward Brodie Friday         1880-1948
George Byron Reed, Jr.       December 7,1858 - December 6, 1929
Charlie Wiley Reed              May 1, 1886 - 1963 - June 16, 1963
Clifford Eugene Reed          1887 - 1975
Julie Odom Reed                 November 2, 1889 -
Marion Reed                       1892-1974
Rudolph Hildbrand Reed     1893 - 1927
Herbert Hair Reed               1898 - 1981
Jacob Hydrick Reed            1898 - 1982
James Roland Reed             1902 - 1981

of these my grandfather was Charlie Wiley Reed

Rowella Hydrick Reed 1858-1927

George Byron, Sr. married Rowella Elizabeth Hydrick whereby the had 10 children. They were:

Elliott Morgan Robinson, Sr. 1856-1877 the first husband
           of Rowella Elizabeth Hydrick 1858-1947

Their son was Elliott Morgan Robinson 1877-1947

      Elliott Robinson, Jr. 1877-1947
       married Minnie Durham 1870-1931

Elliott Morgan Robinson Sr. apparently died the same year he married Rowella and the same year his son, Elliott Morgan Robinson, Jr. was born.

Rowella apparently lived with her son at her father’s home in 1880. Here she is shown with husband Edward Brodie Friday and her son Elliott Morgan Robinson- age 2. 1880 US census

She apparently was carrying Edward Friday, Jr. at this time. When Edward Brodie Friday died in 1880 it is unclear where the sons Elliott Morgan Robinson and Edward Bridie Friday, Jr. lived. When Rowella shows up in the next census (1900) she is married to George Byron Reed and neither EM Robinson or EB Friday are shown on the list. The missing 1890 US census would most likely clear this up or some oral history from family members would be very helpful.

George Byron, Jr. 1884-1918
married Lena Humphrey 1888-1985

George Byron Reed, Jr. 1884-1918 son of George Byron Reed, Sr 1858-1929

 George Byron Reed, Sr. 1886

Charlie Wiley Reed 1886-1963

Marion Reed 1892-1974

Rudolph Hilderbrand Reed 1893-1948

Herburt Hair Reed 1898-1981

Jacob Hydrick Reed 1898-1982

James Roland 1902-1081

Sherman - Would You Hold Him Accountable for War Crimes ?

Sherman - Would You Hold Him Accountable for War Crimes ?

By today's standards or international war ethics (if there really are any such things in war) would General Sherman be guilty of war crimes against the south and her people? Read the account of one of his officers regarding the passage through South Carolina. Pay particular interest in the sadistic way he burned what he couldn't use or carry off, his abuse to the non-combatants and the retaliatory execution of prisoners of war.

General William T. Sherman Comes to Dinner

The story is provided by Roger Ganis whose great grandfather, Michael Joshua Reed, met General Sherman when he was 13 years old. The story was passed on to Mr. Ganis by his grandmother Lula Emma Reed who was Michael Reed's daughter. While I have no reason to doubt the veracity of this story, I have sought historical verification of the facts presented. To that end, I located The Memoirs of General William T. Sherman published in 1876. Several corroborating facts stand out. First, General Sherman traveled with the central column of his army which passed through the Willow Swamp area where the Reed family lived. Second, General Sherman mentions that he was about 5 miles from Bamberg, South Carolina on February 5, 1865 thus putting him in the area of the Reed Plantation. He does not mention a meeting with Anna Reed nor does he indicate which side of Bamberg he was on, however, I believe that this provides at least some historical support for the following story. Furthermore, while not mentioned in his memoirs, it was at this time that Union forces burned the Willow Swamp Baptist Church, not far from the Reed home.
Henry Singer

Great great grandson of Anna R. and James W. Reed Captain in Confederate Army

Gen. William T. Sherman Meets Anna Rebecca Reed
As told by Roger Ganis

In December 1864, Anna Rebecca Reed received the news that Union Army troops under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman had marched from Tennessee to Savannah, GA, during the summer and fall of 1864.
During January and February 1865, Anna Rebecca was at home on the Reed Plantation with her nine children while her husband, Capt. James William Reed, was off serving with the Confederate Army. The children were: William Hugh, age 19, George Sylvester, 16, Michael Joshua, 13, Henrietta, 11, Adella Ellen, 9, Ann Rebecca, 8, James Alexander, 5, Stanmore Judson, 2, and Mary Salina, 1.
Around the last week of January 1865, she learned that Sherman's troops had left Savannah, GA, and were marching through South Carolina. It was thought he was headed to Charleston, SC. The first week in February she learned that Sherman's Army had been involved in a battle on February 2 and 3, 1865, at "Rivers Bridge" on the Salkehatchie River, near Ulmer and Ehrhardt, SC. She also learned that most of his army was headed toward Columbia, the capital of South Carolina. The Reed Plantation lay directly in Sherman's path between Rivers Bridge and Columbia.
After hearing of the battle at Rivers Bridge, Anna Rebecca learned that Sherman's Army was near the Reed place. She had her children and what slaves were left take all of the valuables from the plantation house and hide them by burying them in the ground and hiding things around the plantation. She also had most of the food that had been canned or preserved removed and hidden along with the livestock in the swamp area away from the house so Sherman's Army could not find them.
She had the slaves and her children start preparing food and setting up tables out in front of the plantation house. When the army scouts from General Sherman's Army arrived at the Reed place, she advised them the food was being prepared for Gen. Sherman and his officers. Some of the scouts returned to Gen. Sherman and told him about the dinner that was being held for him at the Reed home.
Gen. Sherman returned to the Reed home along with the scouts and found a large dinner had been prepared. Anna Rebecca Reed, on meeting Gen. Sherman, invited him and his officers to eat. Gen. Sherman accepted her offer, left, and returned to his camp to wash up and put on a clean uniform. A short time later, Gen. Sherman returned along with some of his officers and ate the dinner with the Reed family. Anna Rebecca Reed offered Gen. Sherman the use of her cotton fields for his army to camp on. Gen. Sherman and some of his army set up camp in the cotton fields for the night.
The next day, before his army continued their march northward, Gen. Sherman gave orders that no one was to take anything or burn anything belonging to the Reed family. Before leaving, Gen. Sherman went to Anna Rebecca Reed and thanked her for her hospitality.
A few weeks later, Anna Rebecca learned that Columbia, SC, had surrendered to Sherman's Army on February 17, 1865, and the city had been burned.

While Sherman was at the Reed house, a soldier was discovered inside the house on the stairs going up to the bedrooms. One of the Reed daughters was upstairs at the head of the stairs, and asked him what his was doing there. He replied that he just wanted to talk with her. Some of her brothers saw what was going on and grabbed him and during a scuffle someone hit the soldier on the head with a shovel. The blow killed the soldier, and they decided to hide the body in a closet under the stairs until the other soldiers left.
The next day, after Gen. Sherman left with his army, the carried the soldier's body out back behind the house and buried him in an unmarked grave. No one ever came back to check on the missing soldier. Soldiers were deserting from both the Union and Confederate Armies all the time during this part of the Civil War.

The Reed-Odom Burial Site in Blackville, SC in 2012

The Reed - Odom Family Burial Site in Blackville, SC

This site has been visited by many others over the decades but when it was found by my wife Teresa and I in a  state of overgrowth something needed to be done. The site was overgrown with a thorny vine growth so thick you couldn't close the gate. We could not rest until we showed respect to my ancestors by cleaning this area up. My 2nd. Great Grandfather, My 3rd. Great Grandmother, two 2nd. Great Aunts, a 2nd. Great Uncle as well as two cousins all reside here forever and they deserved better.

We were very fortunate that, Herman Still, the land owner that surrounds the cemetery is willing to allow us to clean the site and will provide for disposal  of the cleanup. The following photos chronicle the process started in March 2012.

Many thanks to my wife Teresa for her tireless efforts. Her photographic skills did not lend to her efforts being in the photos of the cleanup. Rest assured she was on her hands and knees many hours and suffered as many cuts and pricks from the thorns as I did. Many thanks also to Marilyn Reed Thomson, her husband David and their son Ian for their efforts.

The site in mid April when we started in earnest to clean it up.

After the thorns and vines removed we could close the gate.

My 3rd. Great Grandmother, Julia Odem Reed's head stone is located center front of the site.

My 2nd. Great Grandfather John Wiley Reed head stone beside his mother Julia Odom Reed

The broken head stone center is James Henry Reed flanked on the right
by his sister Ellen Reed Birt Aldrich with her two sons Christopher and Cornelius to the rear.

In the rear and to the left are located Martha Reed Kemp and her husband (out of sight here) Henry Kemp is next to her in the corner.

Tom gets started on phase two of ground clearing. A mattox and a lot of energy to clear the over infestation of roots from the thorn bushes. Dig them out, 4 inches at a time! Not seen in the following photos is the extreme effort of cutting thorn vines with limb cutters and hauling the cutting out of the sight by Teresa.

Clearing out around Henry Kemp's head stone that has been broken at sometime in the past. It needs to be restored before it breaks even more beyond repair.

Henry Kemp's head stone base needed to be leveled before we could re-attach the top part.

Cleaning the top part of the head stone in preparation for reassembly.

Epoxy glue should hold as long as the stone stays together. Once the duct tape is removed and the final bit of crack is filled with cement colored caulk it will look much better. 100 year old head stones were typically a softer stone. These head stones appear to be expertly and professionally carved. Some head stones of this and earlier time frames were sometime hand carved by family members of local workers with less skills.
.

Next task is the head stone for James Henry Reed. His stone was also broken cleanly, most likely as a result of a flaw in the stone with water freezing in if, expanding and causing the fracture.

The head stone was never cemented into the base. I had to clean the base before I could mix up  cement to attach the lower half of the head stone to the base securely.

Marilyn and son Ian work toward getting the base for her 2nd. Great Grandfather Henry James Reed's head stone. Once the base gets cemented in place, the top part can be epoxied in place.

While the bottom half cement sets Ian and I install a Confederate Cross to recognize James Henry Reed's service during the War Between the States

Marilyn Reed Thomson admires James Henry Reed's repaired head stone and marker honoring his war service. A little cement color caulk in the slight crack remaining, a good washing of the dirt from the lower half and the stone will look great.

Ian and I attach a sign on the front fence next to the gate.

Cleaning and maintaining the family burial site on February 1, 2015

Just some photos taken when my wife Teresa and I went to Blackville to check on and maintain the family burial site on Gardenia Road. We found all was well there and very little was needed in cleaning. We sprayed weed control poision to keep the weeds and thorns from re-appearing there as they had been in the past.
